This royal throne of kings, this sceptred isle, This earth of majesty, this seat of Mars, This other Eden, demi-paradise, This fortress built by Nature for herself Against infection and the hand of war, This happy breed of men, this little world, This precious stone set in the silver sea, Which serves it in the office of a wall Or as a moat defensive to a house, Against the envy of less happier lands,-- This blessed plot, this earth, this realm, this England. ~~William Shakespeare, Richard III

This Day in History...

November 5, 1605 - Guy Fawkes was arrested after around 30 barrels of gunpowder, camouflaged with coal, were discovered in the cellar under Parliament. The plan had been to blow up James I and Parliament. The 'Gunpowder Plot' is commemorated each year in Britain on this day, "Guy Fawkes' Night."

  1. A while ago now I watched a show where Richard Hammond tried to work out whether the plot to kill James I would have worked had the gunpowder not been discoverd by recreating the conditions.

It was a very interesting and entertaining show, and the results certainly would have been catastrophic!
